You know we’re big fans of the whole Funky scene right? And we’re big fans of supporting new talent? Well, allow us to introduce you to Black Biscuit; 2 London based MCs about to educate you on Skankin! The boys we’re good enough to share a couple of minutes and let us get to know them a bit better
Tell me a bit about yourselves? Where you from, how you started out?
We are both from Harrow, London. We’ve known each other for 8 years and have been doing music together for nearly 4 of them. We both used to MC, and were aware of each other interest in music, we went to different secondary schools, so it was only when we met up in college that we linked up because we both used to dance.
Ok, for the Irish readers who might not be up on the whole Skankin thing, can you explain it to them?
We find that skanking is a term that is often used for ska music, and reggae, but commonly for quite hardcore music, often due to the bass of the music. That is how we believe that the term ’skanking’ has found its way into the funky house terminology, because its all about going hard and letting yourself free once funky is pumping. So skanking is simply the name giving to the form of dance to funky house music, you could be doing anything, because there is no set style.
Funky is quite a regional sound, how far do you see yourselves going?
Funky has a long way to go, it has built up a big following as a genre, and it has only just begun to develope. Funky house is for everyone and that is the reason why we believe that we have a prosperous future in this scene.
Some of the more successful UK underground artists diluted their sound to gain some more sales, the likes of Dizzee, Chipmunk and Ironik arguably wouldn’t have seen the success they have if they didn’t do this… How do you feel about artists doing this?
We believe that it is simply taking the ‘next’ step. We wouldnt say that they were ‘diluting’ their sound but simply adapting their style because they have a built up a much wider listening audience and have to cater for more listenning ears, as well as the public. An artist is useless unless their music is heard.
I’ve heard you guys go in hard when you do your live thing, how important are the PAs and things to you?
Every live performance is imperitive to us, as artists, we want to go on stage and be confident that we can ‘rip’ up any performance hands down. We believe we are only as good as our last performance, so whether there are 100 people in the crowd or 10,000 we’ll treat the performance like it is our last, and go in everytime.
On a similar note, a lot of new artists are building up a fanbase using the likes of Twitter, Facebook and that old dinosaur Myspace. Do you think this has made it easier to break through or are potential fans overloaded with new ‘talent’ coming at them from all angles?
Yes, definately alot of people communicate through the internet and using facebook, twitter and myspace. They have helped us to promote ourselves and our music, we do indeed have our own facebook pages as well as a fanpage where you can see all our events we will be at and information on us.
We just jumped on twitter too its a good way to share what we are doing and share our thoughts you can also follow us here
We have met alot of people over these networking sites and we think has the biggest audiences especially amoung university students
What you got going on in the next few months?
We are doing our live p.a’s anywhere we can, hopefully visit Dublin one day but we are in and out of studio at the moment making new funky house tracks. We also have a few new editions of clothing that will be surfacing, so look out for those. We lookiing for as much air play as we can at the moment 1xtra and Choice fm are airing us on selected shows so also listen out for us on the radio and just getting on as many shows, just getting ourselves out there.
Did you know you share your name with a Japanese pop band?
We found that there was a Japanese pop band with the same name as us, because there videos come up when you search for us on youtube. Have to admit, havent checked out any of their stuff, but the best of luck to them.
Last Q… Who is skankin the hardest?
Still searching. Your guess is as good as ours. Although we like to believe that it is us!
So there you go, Black Biscuit… Get to know! Check ‘em on Facebook and Twitter and the video for ‘Who’s Skankin’ The Hardest’ is below
